Turkey Earthquake Appeal

Two huge earthquakes and more than a hundred aftershocks have hit Turkey, Syria and the surrounding region. The first earthquake, which struck in the early hours of 6 February, was registered as 7.8, classified as "major" on the official magnitude scale. Its epicentre was near Gaziantep - a city of more than two million people.

It is the worst earthquake in Turkey history. Up to 9 Feb, it has caused at least 14,000 death, over 60,000 injuries and causing widespread destruction.

The intensity of the tremors also brought down tower blocks and public buildings in northern Syria and the quake was felt as far away as Cyprus and Lebanon, both about 250 miles (400km) from the epicentre. In Turkey, thousands of buildings are destroyed. Families lost their homes. Over 20 million people need help, including many kids made orphans, staying under snow and rain uncovered, cold and staving.
